Haud Hogmanay!- Black Dog and the Scottish Tradition

The Scots are fun-loving people, and have always been synonymous with revelry and festivity. Thanks to the rich and diverse history of the country, their rituals are a mix of pagan as well as Christian traditions. Even today, one can significantly witness the ancient Celtic and Gaelic customs in the habits and the lifestyle of the people. The festival of Hogmanay is definitely one of the best examples.

Tracing its roots in the Viking tradition of the celebration of the shortest day of the year, Hogmanay is now celebrated in the New Year’s Eve, and is undoubtedly, the most important festival of Scotland. The New Year is welcomed with a toast to good health and wealth in the dawning year, while singing Burns’ ‘Auld Lang Syne’. As per custom, First Footing is performed. It involves paying a visit to friends and family, immediately after midnight strikes. The traditional figure of the First Foot is that of a tall, dark and handsome male, who pays a visit, carrying shortbread, whisky, black bun (a kind of rich fruitcake) and a chunk of coal. He in turn, is given a drink of whisky.

The occasion of Hogmanay is celebrated with immense pomp, complete with delicious food and of course, drinks. The role of scotch whisky, thus, is indispensible. Black Dog, has been a favourite choice of the revelers for more than a century. Being one of the premium scotch brands, it presents the world with the distinct, yet sublime flavours of the Scottish Highlands.
